Maya Lieberman and Gretchen Patch opened Dewey on Abbot Kinney in Venice in September of 2006.
Inspired by their own shopping needs, the pair set out to create a rock-inspired shoe boutique that would satisfy what they felt was a great lack in beautiful, unique shoes and accessories on Los Angeles’ west side.
Maya and Gretchen have spent many years as stylists and costume designers and wanted to share their knowledge with their friends, neighbors and co-workers by opening a shop that incorporated a sense of casual elegance and punk rock attitude.
Dewey, named after Gretchen’s dog, was decorated with that same rock attitude in mind by another local shop owner, Elizabeth Page Smith. The white leather benches and vintage rock ’n’ roll prints bring a fresh look to the fast-growing Abbot Kinney Boulevard.
“We wanted the store to be cool yet inviting. A place to shop but also to hang out.”
Customers at Dewey benefit from Gretchen and Maya’s work experience.
“When you shop for a living you learn what works and what does not.You can spot a classic from a passing trend. The shoes and bags at Dewey are not over-saturated in the LA market so you get something stylish and original.”
